Joe's Emailed Response

Dear Walter -- Thanks for the letter about Bill. There is much in it I tend to agree with.  I indicated to Bill that a rational, intelligent person who has spent his entire life mastering a subject should be trusted (at least initially) more than a novice regarding that particular subject.  This is only common sense.  His misguided reference to this discussion is clearly a reflection of his preconceptions, and there is nothing I can say or could have said to change his belief in a correlation between educational level and credibility.  As you indicated, logical discourse with Bill is possible only up to a point. I nevertheless love Bill dearly, and have supported him in many ways over the years.  His personal deficiencies and mental illness have greatly harmed his relationship with his children, with Mary Ann, and with potential girlfriends.  However, this, to my mind, makes him all the more deserving of support. He has a heart of gold, and would never intentionally hurt anyone.

It is a tragedy that your learning disability was not identified and dealt with in time for it not to have disrupted your life.  With minimally involved parents, and with all of us boys suffering to some degree from mental illness, it is a wonder any of us has a more or less "normal" life.

I dealt with my own version of the Carter mental disorder by isolating myself from co-workers and from the public at large.  I am very close with Angella, Bill, my wife Beth, her parents, and her two children, but that is the extent of my social interaction.  Inability to deal with social situations has greatly limited my life, although it has also made possible a demanding career in research.

Angella, Bill and I have stayed very close, and we have had wonderful times visiting one another at mini family reunions.  I would have loved to have included you in these events, but did not offer to do so because of your threat to harm me and my family if I contacted you.

I expect from Angella and Bill only what they are capable and comfortable with contributing to our relationship.  If this is not a sufficient basis for a personal relationship with you, then I respect that reality.  I do wish, however, that we could at least keep in touch once or twice a year, and that you could join us in future family get togethers.

Jethro is a remarkable young man.  I have very much enjoyed interacting with him.  I am sure you are very proud of him.

My sone Will has two children, Alice (2) and Simon (4).  Will lives in a 20' airstream trailer in the woods near Centralia, Washington.  They live off the land as much as possible, with Will doing odd jobs to make ends meet. He shuns traditional social "games", hierarchies, and establishments.  Go figure!

Julie just "married" her partner Corinna in a beautiful ceremony in Salem, Oregon.  Julie is assistant manager at a Whole Food in Portland.  Fortunately, she inherited her mother's personality.

Mema is very close to the end.  I hope you can visit her soon.  She still recognizes her children, and can converse almost as intelligently as always.

With love -- your brother, Joe

Mr. Bill

My brother, Bill, is fairly smart yet mentally ill.  I have to give him credit, for his mental disability, he has become a highly functional adult at 58 years old.  He currently teaches Journalism at a high school.  He started out with a degree in Special Education but had a hard time teaching it because he wanted to give the special ed kids too much individual attention.  Individual attention is what these kids need but I guess there is a limit to how much of it you can give.  He then got a Master's in Education. His claim to fame is that he almost got a PhD in Education...  but not quite.  I don't  know exactly what happened but he spent a lot of time and effort trying to get there but never quite made it.  I can understand why no one would be willing to hand my brother a PhD.  Bill is somewhat of an idiot but I'm not saying there is anything wrong with that.  No doubt, there are plenty of people who are idiots with PhD's.  I have met many.  The difference is that my brother is an idiot who doesn't understand that he is an idiot.  I suspect the other idiots who earned their PhD's had a pretty good idea what they were.

I'm the youngest in the family at 53. Bill is the 2nd youngest at 58 and Joe is 3rd youngest at 61.  Bill and I  (the 2 youngest) have the most severe mental illness of all the children, although all 5 children are known to be bit strange.  Joe, John (64) and Angela (66) turned out to be successful adults.  When I was in grade school, the school psychologist missed my diagnosis, which pretty much screwed my chances of a normal life.  I'm not saying they diagnosed me wrong,  I'm saying they didn't diagnose me at all.  And, no doubt about it...  they knew I had some major problems.  The final two years of Grade School (5th and 6th), I spent in the school hallway by myself.  The hallway is were I reported to school in the morning and I stayed there all day long for 2 years.  Upon graduating 6th grade, Mr.Brown, the school principle, found me by myself and let me know I didn't pass 5th grade nor 6th grade.  Brown said he pushed me through because he wanted me out of his system.  Brown thought I was an ass hole.  Because the school psychologist missed my diagnosis, it became everyone's belief that I did poorly and disrupted the classrooms simply because I was an ass hole. The teachers believed it, my parents believed it, heck, I even believed I was an ass hole.  The point is, I had an untreated mental condition which made school incredibly hard.  My condition is, what they use to call, minimal brain dysfunction.  It's like having a prefrontal lobotomy, only with proper medication, you get your prefrontal lobes back.  Over the years, I dropped out of a high school, 5 universities and 2 community colleges.  For the most part, I could do the work...  I just couldn't do it fast.  And because no one told me I was battling a mental illness, I aimed for degrees which were way beyond my reach...  like Chemistry, Engineering, Medicine and Computer Science.  I finally got a proper diagnosis at age 40, too late to do any good.  Ironically, I've always loved to learn.  Over the years, I did accumulate a couple hundred school credits (enough credits for a Master's if I had taken the proper subjects). There has never been a point in my life when I didn't have my nose in a nonfiction book.  The point is that despite having a mental illness centered on learning disability, I'm extremely well educated with a great deal of book discipline i.e. I'm no dummy.

The criticism I have always had for my siblings is that they treat each other worse than they would treat a friend.  This seems to be our family modus operandi.  In fact, if they treated their friends the same as they do each other, none of them would have friends.  This is the exact opposite of what I witnessed in other families.  There, a best friend was still an outsider but a brother or sister was family. When I was younger, I always hoped my brothers and sister would evolve into people with more traditional attitudes toward their siblings but that never happened.  In 2003, Bill and I had traded a few e-mails then one day, I sent Bill an e-mail and got nothing back...  once again, something you wouldn't do to a friend much less a brother.  Giving Bill the benefit of doubt,  I sent another e-mail explaining to Bill the possible repercussions of ignoring this second email.  To little surprise, Bill ignored my 2nd email too.  Three years later, Bill sent me an email expecting me to read it.  Why?  Would he ever expect a friend read his email?

I showed up back in Kansas a few days ago.  I came to Kansas with many revelations about the New World Order (NWO).  Because we all know the Main Stream Media (MSM) serves the NWO, there are many large news items which can easily be exposed as fraud, given folks will actually examine the evidence.  I have spent hundreds of hours digging this stuff up and feel it's my obligation to expose as much as possible.  I would want to be enlightened if it were me sitting in the dark.  I think everyone has a pretty good idea that the Federal Government is corrupt.  What is hard for most folks to fathom is the depth and width of the corruption.  I feel it's my job to lay down the crumbs so folks can discover this on their own.  Of all corruption, nothing has more evidence of fraud than the moon landings.*  That's where I like to start my expose' because if you are unable to digest the moon landing material, I doubt you'll get any of the other topics   I tried to start Bill out with this nugget and came across some resistance that I really didn't understand.  Bill refused to look at the evidence, much of which came directly from the official NASA web site.  Bill said he was too busy to look at the evidence, although one could examine one piece of it in just a few minutes.  I shrugged it off, thinking he must be really busy.  The next day, Bill tracked down a fellow at his school who had worked at NASA and he copied off a multi-page pro-moon landing paper which tried to refute a small portion of the evidence.  I couldn't understand what was going on.  Bill had no time to look at my evidence but evidently had lots of time to talk to a guy who worked for NASA?  The NASA guy (according to Bill) constitutes an expert and any expert (according to Bill) is trump to hard evidence.  My gut feeling was that Bill had to know better than this.  Even if Bill didn't know that scientists and engineers must maintain the NWO myths in order to keep their jobs, how could he come up with this nonsense about the testimony of one "expert"  trumping a hundred pieces of hard evidence?  Is this mental illness or stupidity?  Whenever I gave Bill some hard evidence to look at, Bill immediately got sleepy and passed out.  What was going on?
*There are many web sites with good evidence about the moon landing but I have found that this has the most complete evidence in one place. AULIS.COM

Bill converted to Mormonism when he was still a teenager and has been a Mormon apologist ever since.  Does my brother naturally gravitate to the weaker argument?  As if the case for Mormonism wasn't weak enough, I recently stumbled across a fellow's web site which puts together recently discovered evidence to make the case against Mormonism even stronger.*  The evidence supports the following story:  Sidney Rigdon was a popular, charismatic preacher around 1820.  Rigdon picked up some radical ideas from a congregation known as the Campbelites.  Rigdon liked the idea of a current day profit, probably because it made conning the congregation an effortless proposition.  Because of his ideas, Rigdon was excommunicated from his congregation.  Rigdon scrapes out a living as a book binder and a treasure diviner (con man).  Joseph Smith Jr, also a treasure diviner, meet up with Rigdon some time in the 1820's.  Meanwhile, a poor, Dartmouth educated man named Solomon Spalding writes a novel named Manuscript Found in the early 1800's.  Spalding dies in 1816 but not before leaving off Manuscript Found at the printers, which never gets published.  Conveniently, Spalding's book is written in the old English style of the King James bible.  Rigdon, a book binder, steals Spalding's abandoned manuscript from the Pittsburgh printer where he works.  With a few changes, Rigdon turns Spalding's novel into the Book of Mormon (BOM).  Using familiar con methods, Joseph Smith Jr reads golden plates to assistants writing it down, the result is Rigdon's BOM.  The first 113 pages of the translation is lost, which gives Rigdon the chance to rewrite it and includes all the Campbelite ideas he likes.  That is, it doesn't have all the Campbelite ideas...  just the ones Rigdon likes.  Sidney Rigdon becomes the first man Joseph Smith Jr baptizes.  Rigdon had always figured that he would run the church but Smith appoints himself number one.  Rigdon is delegated to 2nd in command. The BOM is published in 1830.  Rigdon and Smith make church prophecies (sometimes together) where one would talk and the other would say "I see the exact same thing".  From 1830 to 1840, Smith, who is married, porks as many women as he can.  Some of the women Smith porks are as young as 13, most of the women are already married.  Smith sends their husbands on far away missions.  Smith tells the women he's looking to pork that he must pork them otherwise an angel would slay him.  Smith has porked so many women by 1840 that it has become a political scandal within the church.  In 1840, Smith makes a polygamy doctrine and here's how it works:  The higher up a man is in the church hierarchy, the more a woman should want to pork him (already married or not) because she would be trading up to a higher place in heaven.  Clearly, the polygamy doctrine was to cover the stuff they had already been doing for the last 10 years.  It had nothing to do with prophecy.  At some point, Joseph Smith Jr. joined the Masons, learning secret hand shakes and secret distress signals other Masons would recognize.  Two months later, Smith incorporated many of the Mason rituals into his church by divine revelation, which became what is now the temple rituals.  Running low on cash in 1844, Smith decides to charter a bank so he can print his own money.   But without capital, the State of Ohio denies his application.  Smith decides to print his own money regardlessly, printing on the bills "non bank notes".  Smith displays to the town a treasure chest full of silver but only the top layer was really silver, the rest junk.  Savvy merchants cash the nonbank bills as soon as they get them and the bank soon goes busted.  Over the years, Smith and Rigdon jockey to be in control of the church, each threatening the other with exposure.  Rigdon is excommunicated no less than 3 separate times and immediately restored to 2nd in command each of those times.  Later in 1844, a flyer is printed critical of Smith.  Smith orders the press destroyed before the 2nd flyer is printed.  Smith is arrested and jailed in Carthage, Ohio.  A mob comes for Smith while in jail and Smith fires a pistol into the crowd, killing two.  Sometime before dying of gunshot, Smith goes to the jailhouse window and displays the secret Mason distress sign, hoping to be saved by another Mason.

The first question is how does Bill justify his faith in the face of all the evidence?  If I were Bill, I wouldn't know where to begin but here is what Bill has to say:  1)  You have to go to the original records and see what the individual perpetrators have to say.  In other words, if Rigdon says he didn't write the BOM then that should counter all the evidence that indicate he did.  Simple denials by the criminals in question weigh heavy in the Mormon religion I suppose.  2)  Compare and contrast.  The best example of this technique is Smith's false prophesy.  For example, Smith prophesied that a church temple would be built within a few months in Independence, MO.  To this day, there is still no temple in Independence.  Bill says this is easily explained away by comparing and contrasting Smith's true prophesy to Smith's false prophesy.  This is rather like a prophet fudge factor...   that is, you're still a divine prophet as long as you get most of the prophesies right.  Compare and contrast is also used on a larger scale to mentally rinse away all the evidence that the whole thing was a scam.  Bill asks that you compare and contrast Smith's skill as a charlatan with Smith's capacity to create a worthwhile religion.  In other words, if the only way to create such a church is by elaborate con then the con-job becomes justified and sanctioned by God himself.  So wrong cannot only become right, wrong can become an inspiration of God.  At this point, I'm not ready to declare my brother a village idiot but I am considering the possibility.  Read on.

Bill really looks up to his older brother, Joe.  Joe has a PhD from an ivy league school.  Yesterday, we were traveling in a car when Bill let loose his nugget of knowledge handed down from Joe, the doctorate from Yale.  Joe had told Bill that no one believes a person who holds a bachelors degree, people believe half of what comes from a person holding a master's degree and they believe all of what comes from a PhD.  Now you  would think this statement is pretty straight forward and doesn't need explaining.  But a mentally ill person, like Bill, could (and did) receive a completely unintended meaning from this.  Obviously, Joe was talking about how society perceives people with these degrees.  The person with the higher degree (certainly for the most part) hasn't changed his ideas or opinions.  This is especially true for virtually everything outside that person's very narrow niche of intense knowledge. Pardon me for over explaining but obviously Joe was speaking of society's perception of the advanced degree holder.  My mentally ill brother took this to mean that a person with a bachelors degree is never right about anything, a person with a master's degree is sometimes correct and a person with a PhD is never wrong about anything...  regardless of the subject!  Being that my brother worked toward his PhD, it's irrelevant that he never actually got a PhD.  Bill believes he almost got a PhD; therefore, almost everything that he thinks or says is beyond reproach.  Had he actually earned his PhD he would have believed himself to be infallible.  This is a round about way of saying my brother believes in magic because Joe  told him that higher degrees were magic.

Coming back to the Apollo moon landing fraud, I kept showing Bill different pieces of photographic evidence which indicates the official NASA moon landing photos where shot inside a studio.  Let's stop for a moment to look at this situation from Bill's point of view.  Let's give the levels of magic numerical values so that no education equals zero, high school = 1, community college = 2, bachelors degree = 3, master's degree = 4 and a PhD = 5 (the most possible magic).  Bill believes he almost got his PhD so he believes he is almost a 5, let's say 4.9.  Likewise, Bill believes I have a high school education, magic level 1.  So from Bill's view, Bill has magic to the extent that he cannot possibly believe something that is not true.  Further, a 4.9 magician cannot be enlightened by those with lesser magic.  In fact, per what Bill understood from Joe, a person with minimal magic is always wrong.  (I'm guessing the "always wrong" rule only applies when in conflict with what a high magician believes at the time.)  After I had forced Bill to see enough photographic evidence, Bill performed some mental gymnastics absolutely masterful in keeping all his mentally ill notions in tact.  Bill wanted me to write NASA and ask them why the public is being shown moon landing shots taken inside a studio instead of the real moon landing shots taken on the surface of the moon.  Compare and contrast.  Let's ask NASA if they faked the moon landing.  If they say they didn't then that should explain everything.  The testimony of criminals always weighs heavy when supporting Bill's ideas.

I finally asked Bill how I could be categorically wrong about everything...  all the time.  Bill explained to me that his magic being a 4.9 and my magic being (1) one, naturally, I had no chance of being correct about anything.  Of course, Bill never used the words "magic" but that was the essence of what he said.  An interesting question is whether Bill believes his own hog wash.  When I was young, I use to believe some pretty whacked out stuff.  I was a lonely, isolated and socially deprived.  You would expect someone like that to believe things not very well grounded.  When I was 17, I remember telling people that my family was rich and that my father was a "master surgeon"..  It wasn't something I planned to do, it just sort of flew together in my head and I blurted it out.  In reality, my father had a master's degree in biology and he was a doctor of dental surgery (a dentist).  Combining the two does not make him a master surgeon.  And my father was certainly not rich.  Did I know it was a lie when I blurted it out?  I'm not sure I did.  It may have been something my subconscious put together out of wishful thinking.  After a couple of days, I admitted that my father was simply a dentist and not rich at all.  No one caught my lie, I caught my own lie.  It looks like Bill's subconscious is twisting reality just like my subconscious did for me.  The difference is that I have learned to check the work of my subconscious; whereas, Bill, apparently, does not.  Or does he?

Bill is very pleasant to talk to until you challenge what he believes (which can be often). Once this happens, he will prevent you from making your argument by talking over you.  You will hear him loudly repeat "YOU'RE BIASED", "YOU'RE POLARAIZED"  "YOU HAVEN'T DONE THE RESEARCH"  and "YOU DON'T HAVE MY FOUNDATION IN SCIENCE" until you give up and walk away. For example, if I were to hand him this blog, I'm confident he would never read it.  Does this mean Bill is trying to protect his delicate concept of  magic degrees?  Well, if Bill never has to listen to another's argument then, yes, he is effectively protecting this idea.   But Bill could also believe that people with less magic are simply wasting his time.  Think about it.  Joe already told him the lesser wizards are never right.*  If so, why waste your time by giving them an audience?  By definition, the lessors are not right and can never be right.  As if Bill didn't have enough problems, he also believes the PhD's (his peers) can never be wrong, because that is what Bill believes Joe told him.  So, if a PhD who worked at NASA tells Bill that men walked on the moon, Bill is unable to consider the possibility that PhD's from NASA may need to lie for their safety or to keep their jobs.  Joe never explained to Bill that politics may queer the answers of those with supreme magic.  Bill just knows the PhD's are never wrong about anything regardless of topic.  I really don't know what you would call this type of mental illness but it is characterized by infinite gullibility  and lack of common sense.  If that's a village idiot then I guess that's what he is.
*Let's assume Bill's misguided view of the world is correct.  What would prevent you from doing basic research by asking questions of people with zero magic?  You could get pretty far if guaranteed each answer were precisely wrong.

Special Note to Joe Carter, Full Wizard, level 5

This is your fault.  Think about the common threads of the LDS Mormon church and Bill's notion of magic degrees.  Why is the Mormon church Bill's crack cocaine despite overwhelming evidence of it being bunk?  Bill's mental illness causes him to feel delusions of grandeur and such delusions where there long before he became a Mormon, long before he twisted your comment about advanced degrees.  The church teaches that Bill is ruler and final word over his wife/girlfriend.  Well, what's not to like about that?  Delusional Bill already thought he was heads and hands above women before he ever found the church.  The church teaches Bill he will be a God of his own earth in the coming afterlife.  Once again, what's not to like?  Delusional Bill already believed  he was a deity before he ever heard of the LDS church.  If every LDS member on earth dropped out, delusional Bill would still be a tithe paying member because the LDS church reinforces Bill's mental illness.  It's like a man driven to torchere animals getting to work the skull blaster in a slaughtering house.  Would such a man care if the slaughtering house were dishonest?

The point is, you (singular tense) have to be careful about what you say to Bill Jr.  If Bill believes nothing I say, he believes everything you say.  With that kind of power, you need to be overly cautious about  your off-the-cuff comments and observations.  Your brother is bat-shit crazy and you need to recognize that fact by monitoring what you say.  If you choose to make a similar passing comment then you cannot assume he will understand it like everyone else.  I would suggest you think about whether your bat-shit crazy delusional brother could possibly take your comment in an unintended manner and if the answer is yes, don't make the comment.  If you do make the comment then you need to over explain it so as to not sow the seeds of future megalomanic episodes.

As far as the current problem, you are the only one who can undo this.  I suggest you spend a good hour on the phone explaining what you meant when you said "People believe everything a PhD says".  I will never show this blog to Bill Jr as I doubt it would do any good even if I did.
